Sweetness, Simplified

Sweetness, Simplified

A note from me to you

If you have ever ordered a drink with us and thought, “This isn’t overwhelmingly sweet,” you are absolutely right, and it is intentional.

At Serenity Sips, we do not build our recipes around maximum sweetness. We build them around flavor, balance, and how your body actually responds to what is in your cup.

We use just the right amount to enhance flavor without overwhelming the drink or placing unnecessary metabolic demand on your body.

And if something is ever not sweet enough for you, please let us know. We are always happy to adjust. Wellness should still taste good, and everyone’s palate is different.

Why Sweeteners Matter

Sweeteners are not inherently good or bad. They are tools. How they affect the body depends on the type, the amount, and the context of the overall diet.

One of the most helpful ways to understand sweeteners is by looking at the glycemic index and how the body metabolizes different forms of sugar.

What Is the Glycemic Index

The glycemic index, or GI, measures how quickly a food raises blood sugar compared to pure glucose.

  • High GI foods tend to raise blood sugar quickly
  • Low GI foods raise blood sugar more slowly and steadily

However, GI is not the only factor. Conversion pathways, insulin response, liver metabolism, gut microbiome effects, and total dose all play important roles in how a sweetener impacts health.

The Sweeteners We Use and Why

Organic Pure Cane Sugar and Organic Brown Sugar

Glycemic index approximately 60 to 65

These are our traditional bases for many of our recipes.

  • Minimally processed and derived from sugarcane
  • Brown sugar retains small amounts of minerals from molasses
  • Metabolized into glucose and fructose for energy

We use these intentionally and in measured amounts. Our approach is closer to an old soda fountain or classic café than modern, syrup-heavy drinks.

Organic Honey

Glycemic index approximately 50 to 60, depending on source

Honey is a natural blend of glucose and fructose and contains antioxidants and enzymes.

  • Generally gentler on blood sugar than refined sugar
  • Still raises blood sugar, but typically at a slower rate
  • Best used in moderation

We use honey for depth and warmth rather than intense sweetness.

Organic Molasses

Glycemic index approximately 55

Molasses is one of the most mineral-dense sweeteners available.

  • Contains iron, magnesium, potassium, and calcium
  • Digests more slowly than refined sugar
  • Has a bold, rich flavor

This is a heritage ingredient that adds complexity and grounding to certain recipes.

Organic Blue Agave

Glycemic index approximately 15 to 30

Agave is often marketed as a low-glycemic sweetener, which is technically true. However, it is important to understand how it is metabolized.

  • Very high in fructose
  • Primarily processed by the liver
  • Can place metabolic stress on the body when used in large amounts

For this reason, we limit the quantity we use. It is an option, but it is not our preferred foundation.

Our Sugar-Free Philosophy

Allulose, Our Primary Sugar-Free Base

Glycemic index approximately 0 to 1

Allulose is one of the most promising sugar alternatives available today.

  • Naturally found in small amounts in foods like figs and raisins
  • Very similar taste and texture to sugar
  • Absorbed by the body but not metabolized for energy
  • Minimal impact on blood sugar and insulin levels
  • Emerging research suggests potential metabolic benefits

This is why allulose is the base of our sugar-free recipes.

Monk Fruit/ Stevia blend, Available by Request

Glycemic index 0

  • Derived from plants
  • No measurable impact on blood sugar
  • Very concentrated sweetness

Some people enjoy these sweeteners, while others are sensitive to the taste. We keep packets available so you can choose what works best for you.

What We Intentionally Avoid as a Base

We do not build our recipes around:

  • Sucralose
  • Aspartame
  • Saccharin
  • High-dose sugar alcohols

Not out of fear, but because these sweeteners can disrupt gut balance for some people and do not align with our philosophy of clean, timeless flavor.

Our Bigger Picture

We want Serenity Sips to feel like stepping back in time, before ultra-sweet drinks, artificial flavors, and overly engineered food became the norm.

Our focus is on:

  • Clean ingredients
  • Balanced sweetness
  • Thoughtful portions
  • Flavor first

Sweet enough to enjoy.

Gentle enough to support your body.

Flexible enough to meet you where you are.

And if you ever want it a little sweeter, just let us know. We are always happy to make it better for you.

With intention,

CJ Potter
